Special Olympics
My youngest brother, Mark, was born with Downs Syndrome, a genetic disorder causing a type of mental retardation. The doctors, at that time, told my parents not to expect much so it came as a shock to see my brother, the youngest of seven children, trying to keep up with his older brothers and sisters. My parents, to encourage Mark's sense of accomplishment, enrolled my brother in a program called Special Olympics. This, now, world wide organization was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver and, originally, were conducted as a series of sports camps in 1962. These camps eventually morphed into international sports competitions. The very first Special Olympics Games were held in Chicago, Illinois, in 1968. The International Olympic Committee recognized Special Olympics in 1988. In July of 2006, the first U.S. national games were held in Iowa. All 50 states were and continue to be represented at the National Special Olympics. The goal of Special Olympics is to provide an arena for the mentally impaired or physically challenged children and adults) to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Special Olympics currently serves 2.5 million people with intellectual disabilities in more than 200 Programs in 165 countries. For an awe-inspiring article read "The Heart of Growth" by Timothy P. Shriver, Ph.D. found on the Special Olympics website. There are many ways YOU can contribute to the Special Olympics organization. In my state, Michigan, the Law Enforcement Torch Run is having it's Polar Plunge in many cities across the state. All proceeds, of course, are donated to Special Olympics. Won't you visit their website in your country or state today? |
